NEWS RELEASE – FRIDAY 3rd DECEMBER 2017

What on Earth Publishing is delighted to announce a partnership between the Illinois Bicentennial Commission, The Abraham Lincoln Presidential Library and Museum, and the Illinois State Board of Education (ISBE) to create a stunning new timeline book to celebrate the 200th anniversary of the State.

The timeline book, called The Illinois Chronicles, contains more than 50 ‘newspaper’ articles and a unique 100-moment, 6-foot-long, fold-out timeline that charts the history of the State from its birth in 1818 to the present day.

Illinois State Governor Bruce Rauner has written a preface inside the book, detailing its significance as the State’s Bicentennial gets underway:

“We are very excited to share with you the Illinois Chronicles in celebration of the Illinois Bicentennial. Illinois is the Land of Lincoln. We are a melting pot of culture and diversity, as seen through our communities, music, restaurants, sports teams and heroes.”

“I hope this book and our Bicentennial celebration inspires you to think about the next 200 years of our great state and the legacy you will create,” he said.9780995577015_02_iart

The Illinois Chronicles, which retails for $14.95, contains a selection of highly engaging newspaper articles written by world-leading journalist and author Mark Skipworth, in collaboration with the Abraham Lincoln Presidential Library and Museum in Springfield, IL.

“Illinois is a State with so many fabulous stories to tell,” he said, “both highs and lows. It’s really exciting to have them all gathered in one place so people of all ages can, literally, read all about it!”

James Cornelius, keeper of the Lincoln Collection at the Abraham Lincoln Presidential Library and Museum, and also a member of the Illinois Bicentennial Commission, said the book will form a key part of the Bicentennial legacy.

“Having an easy to read but detailed and informative narrative in the style of reportage and a timeline is not only unique, but will also be highly relevant and engaging for years to come. We are thrilled to have been a partner in this project,” he said.

A list of key places to visit is included on the back of the timeline along with a summary of civic government, a list of State flags, an honor roll of key figures and a glossary of key terms.

State Superintendent Tony Smith, Ph.D., believes the book will provide a vital new resource for teachers and pupils alike to learn about the collective history of Illinois over the last 200 years.

“Utilizing chronological historical resources presented in an innovative timeline creates a remarkable opportunity to teach us about our shared heritage, as well as help us think about the future,” said Smith.

A team of ISBE content specialists are developing an Educators Pack that will enhance the book and be available as a free downloadable PDF. It will contain a range of cross-curricular activities for K-12 to help educators incorporate the teaching of state history across social studies, science, literacy, math, and art.

“This is really a complete innovation in the way we can think about teaching the history of our state,” said Katie Elvidge, Social Studies Content Specialist for the State of Illinois. “The Illinois Chronicles and its Educator Pack will be something any teacher can refer to for imaginative and creative ideas about how to embed the teaching of our history across all subject areas,” she said.
