About the Illinois Chronicles
Beautifully illustrated and hugely engaging, the 4.5-foot-long timeline features more than 100 stunning images and illuminating captions that take readers young and old on the Prairie State’s remarkable journey. The Illinois Chronicles also includes more than 50 newspaper articles, written as if they happened yesterday, which capture key moments in Illinois history in a newsy and entertaining way. It all adds up to an exciting story of people and events whose unique legacy can still be felt today in the 21st State of the Union.
This fabulous new way of approaching State history has been developed in partnership with the Illinois200 Bicentennial Commission, The Abraham Lincoln Presidential Library and Museum and the Illinois State Board of Education (ISBE).
The Illinois Chronicles is the first in a series of State histories that will be publishing by What on Earth Publishing in the following months and years.

There are three major features that I like about this book. I love the fact that the story of the state of Illinois is told with newspaper articles as if the events happened yesterday. I feel like this feature gives even reluctant readers a more entertaining way of learning the history of Illinois. I also love the six-foot fold-out timeline from 1810-the present day. It highlights many events ranging from sports and adventure to politics and civil rights. And finally, as a former educator, I have to mention there is an Educator’s Guide sold separately or available as a free downloadable PDF. The guide is packed full of activity ideas to enhance the teaching of state history, and it is also mapped to Illinois ELA and Social Science Standards.
