What could be more thrilling than discovering the fossilized remains of a creature that lived millions of years ago? I first fell in love with fossils when I was a little kid, looking for brachiopods with my granddad, in the Devonian rocks of the Catskill Mountains where I grew up. Granddad was a farmer and an avid a conservationist. Later in life, he followed his dream to become a writer, and I knew I wanted to follow in his footsteps.

In college, I majored in English and Art History. After earning my master’s degree, I began working as a children’s books editor at a big publishing house in New York. It didn’t take me long to realize my passion for non-fiction—especially science and natural history. With inspiration, encouragement, and lots of help from the amazing writers and editors I worked with there, I managed to write my own first book, “What Lives in a Shell?” in 1994. And I’ve written new books every year since then.

Today, when I’m not at my desk doing research, writing, or editing, you can find me out in the field hunting for fossils, or volunteering at my local natural history museum. I live in sunny, foggy, wonderfully quirky Berkeley, California, with my husband, son, and three extremely intelligent cats.
